Unique WW2 US Navy Wavemeter Steampunk Nixie Clock -Lighting Effects, IN-8 Tubes

  

A unique steampunk style nixie clock based on a WW2 US Navy Wavemeter, this clock uses the well proven PV `funclock` to drive the four socketed IN-8 tubes arranged in front of the large illuminated valve mounted on the top. These tubes have very clear 18mm high digits, and tube changing is easy due to simple socket arrangement.

Lighting effects can be switched on or off and dimmed using the original controls on the front panel. The large valve on the top and the lights below the base are remote controlled with lots of colour choices and colour changing effects etc. I`ve been building these clocks for a few years now as a hobby.

Tubes have ultraviolet colour underlighting. 4 Valves at the rear have dimmable underighting, as well as the illuminated dial on the front panel.

I`ve used some of the original internals to make up the array on the top. Large valve on the right is mounted on the original input socket and can even be unplugged! It has colour changing and flickering light effects. Looks amazing at night throwing up some interesting shadows on the wall. Comes with the original code book which lives in a retainer under the clock- a nice conversation piece!

This was not an easy project as the original interior was absolutely crammed with electronics, and being a high quality US construction did not want to come apart easily! Hours of work goes in to each one - finding a suitable case to restore and modify, machining and fitting parts, wiring etc. Each one is totally unique. Runs off standard 12vdc 500ma wall adaptor.

Uses a Quartz Crystal Oscillator as the timebase. Keeps time during short power outages.

Simple time setting using two buttons. Seconds can be reset to zero to precisely the set time. Programmable night mode - blanked or dimmed display to save tubes or prevent sleep disturbance. Separate modes for colon neon during night mode. Standard, or scrollback display modes.

Slot Machine Cathode poisoning prevention routine. Not AC frequency dependent works in all countries. All user preferences stored to non-volatile memory.
